What a wild week at #SXSW! The story starts Saturday while I waited to go into @jordanjustright’s session & my bionic arm started doing its telltale IM DYING beeping, which confused me since I knew I plugged it in the night before. This one time though I guess I didn’t make sure the plug was all the way in bc sure enough, dead. The next few hrs were filled w finding a courier to bring my charger from my hotel to SXSW - because even though I had it the day before, of course I forgot it today. Needless to say I was having a stressful day & wasn’t on my A game. I got into a panel I’d been waiting to watch & tweet about. I saw a person charging their phone by some chairs along the wall & thought “PERFECT.” As I walked up w the cord plugged into my arm & holding the adapter side, another person walked up to charge their phone & got there before me. I really wasn’t sure so I asked “Is there any room to plug in my arm?“ To which I got the response “Nope, maybe there’s some room in the back.” I went to the back & sure enough, there was! It was standing room only back there but I thought oh well, time to charge up! I asked a random stranger to snap a pic bc I thought this was an interesting/funny moment, something people w/out prosthetic limbs might not realize is normal for us. I quickly tweeted about it so I could get moving to my next panel. I regret my word choice. I never should’ve said “refused” which implied I was entitled over them, which obviously I’m not. Maybe they had important work or didn't realize my prosthesis, either way I didn’t mean to sound hateful or shame them if that seemed implied. Days later my tweet ended up on several media platforms w some positive responses - but a lot of negative calling me out. I wish I would’ve typed that tweet in a more positive tone. Maybe “Don’t you all wish you could charge up when your body feels like it’s not functioning correctly anymore at #SXSW” but I can’t fix it now. I’m glad though that the tweet has brought in so many people who didn’t know about prosthetic limbs & charging before this. I’m glad I was able to educate on the tech but from now on, I’ll be more careful w my wording! More SXSW content to come!
